Why a bouquet of hydrangeas?

Hydrangea is a typical Dutch classic. Large, round flower clusters shaped like a fluffy clump. One or two stems immediately fill a beautiful vase, and with a few branches together you get a statement bouquet that makes everyone stop and look.

They suit almost any interior. A bouquet of pastel-blue hydrangeas fits well in a calm Scandinavian living room, while a bright pink or deep purple bouquet adds character to a whiter living space. And the flowers remain beautiful as they dry out, so you can enjoy them for weeks after the initial phase.

Which hydrangea colors can you choose?

Hydrangea comes in a wide range of colors, and the color depends largely on the type of soil in which the plant grows. The most common shades:

  • White and cream: timeless, romantic, and suitable for almost any occasion.
  • Pink: from soft pink to bright pink. Classic for Mother's Day or a birthday.
  • Blue: from pastel blue to deeper sky blue. Cool, suits calm interiors.
  • Purple: deeper and warmer. Bold and headstrong.
  • Green: lime green shades that work more as a base, also beautiful for a natural wildflower bouquet.

Combining colors in a single bouquet can also be beautiful. Two shades of pink with white adds depth. Or a mixed bouquet with blue, purple, and lilac for a full bohemian effect.

When is the hydrangea at its most beautiful?

The hydrangea season generally runs from late May to late October. In June and July, the flowers are at their largest and sturdier, perfect for a full bouquet. From August onwards, we see more and more vintage shades appearing, the so-called antique varieties where green, pink, and blue blend together.

Early greenhouse hydrangeas are available all year round, but from May to October you get the freshest and most vibrant cut flowers, often from Dutch nurseries. At Kibb Flowers in Haarlem, we work with this regional supply whenever possible.

Combine with other flowers

Hydrangea is a rewarding flower to combine with, precisely because the large flower clusters visually require a lot of space. A few combinations that always work:

  • Hydrangea with roses: chic and romantic.
  • Hydrangea with eucalyptus: fresh and contemporary.
  • Hydrangea with peonies: lush and somewhat old-fashioned romantic (in June-July).
  • Hydrangea with grasses and wildflowers: natural field bouquet effect.
  • Hydrangea with white lilies: timeless and suitable for sympathy or funeral bouquets.

By using hydrangea as a base and adding variety with other stems, you get a bouquet that stands out above the standard supermarket level.

How do you keep a hydrangea bouquet beautiful for a long time?

The hydrangea is a sensitive drinker. What you do determines whether it stays beautiful for four days or almost two weeks. Five concrete tips:

  1. Cut each stem diagonally upon receipt, preferably under lukewarm water. This opens the veins.
  2. Remove the lower leaves. Leaves underwater will rot and give bacteria a chance to multiply.
  3. Use a clean vase with fresh, cool water. Add cut flower food if desired.
  4. Give the hydrangea plenty of water. Unlike most flowers, it drinks a lot, so change the water every two to three days.
  5. Do not place it in direct sunlight or near the heater. That accelerates wilting.

Bonus tip: if the hydrangea wilts despite everything, submerge the entire flower (head and stem) in water for ten minutes. It often perks up again.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a bouquet of hydrangeas stay beautiful?

With proper care (regularly changing the water, cutting at an angle, out of the sun), a hydrangea remains beautiful for an average of seven to ten days. Some varieties last well over two weeks.

Which color hydrangea suits Mother's Day?

Pink and white are classic Mother's Day choices. Want to stand out? Try a mix of soft pink with purple or a bright lime green accent. At Kibb, we put together every Mother's Day bouquet with a personal color choice.

Can I combine sunflowers with a specific theme or color?

Yes. Whether it concerns the deceased's favorite color, a garden or nature theme, or flowers from their garden: we make it custom-made. Send us a photo of what you have in mind or give us a call.

Can I have my hydrangea bouquet delivered in Haarlem?

Yes, we deliver daily (except Sundays) in Haarlem and the surrounding area. If you order before 12:00 noon, we will deliver the same day.

Which flower combines best with hydrangea?

Roses, eucalyptus, peonies, and wildflowers all work well. The choice depends on the occasion: roses and hydrangeas together look classic and romantic, while hydrangeas with eucalyptus are more modern and fresh.

When is hydrangea at its most beautiful?

June to August is the peak time for fresh Dutch hydrangeas. In the autumn (September-October), you see vintage shades where green, pink, and blue blend together, especially beautiful for autumn bouquets.
