Funeral bouquet with sunflowers

Not everyone wants only white lilies and moss-green branches at a funeral. For some, the deceased does not fit that classic white image. A funeral bouquet with sunflowers conveys something different: warm, sunny, a memory of someone who brought sunshine into the home. More and more people are making this choice consciously.

Below you can read when a funeral bouquet with sunflowers is appropriate, which flowers to combine it with, and what to look out for when ordering. At Kibb Flowers in Haarlem, we make these bouquets ourselves, tailored to suit the person you are commemorating.

Why choose sunflowers for a funeral?

Sunflowers do not suit every farewell, but for some people, they are exactly the right choice. People who lived their lives with energy, humor, and warmth. People who always knew how to brighten up a room. For them, a funeral bouquet with sunflowers can say more about them than a traditional white bouquet.

There is also a calmness in sunflowers. They are large, full, and have a distinct presence. At a funeral where many people gather, a sunflower bouquet fills the space without becoming overwhelming.

What it evokes is a feeling of: "this was someone who lived".

What a funeral bouquet with sunflowers tells

Flowers at a farewell tell a story. A bunch of white lilies speaks of respect and silence. A traditional funeral arrangement in dark colors speaks of mourning. A bouquet of sunflowers tells a different story, which is why people choose it consciously.

Warmth is what they evoke first. The color is yellow-orange, the association is sun, summer, life.

In addition, they speak of personality. Sunflowers are not inconspicuous. They suit someone with a distinct character, someone you remember for who he or she was.

There is also an honesty at play. No attempt at restraint, no hiding behind conventions. Rather, an open statement: this person was like this, and we honor that.

And finally, hope. The sunflower follows the sun. For people who believe, believe in something, or are simply seeking light in dark times, sunflowers are a sign of that direction.

Which flowers do you combine sunflowers with?

A funeral bouquet with only sunflowers is beautiful but can appear somewhat blocky. Most people choose a combination in which sunflowers form the heart and other flowers add structure and softness. Here are a few combinations that work.

Sunflowers with white roses or peonies create a beautiful blend of classic and warmth. You retain something of the traditional mourning style, but with personality.

Sunflowers with purple or dark blue flowers, such as delphiniums or irises, provide a strong color contrast. Beautiful for the farewell of someone with an artistic or visual personality.

Sunflowers with greenery and wild grasses create a natural, relaxed look. It suits people who loved nature, their garden, and the outdoors.

Sunflowers with chrysanthemums and autumn colors come across as warm and earthy. A beautiful choice for the fall.

We would be happy to look with you at what suits the person you are commemorating.

In which season is it best to order a sunflower funeral bouquet?

Sunflowers are a summer flower in the Dutch countryside, with a peak season from late June to mid-October. During that period, the most beautiful and largest sunflowers are available through auctions and local growers.

Outside that season, sunflowers are still available through imports and greenhouse cultivation, but the quality varies. In winter, the flowers are often smaller and less full. For those who specifically want the typical large, heavy sunflowers, May to October is the best time.

A farewell often comes unexpectedly, and then the season is what it is.

We always work with whatever is most beautiful on the market at that moment. If sunflowers are less attractive out of season, we sometimes recommend a combination with yellow roses or gerberas for a similar effect.

Practical: ordering and delivery

Ideally, you have a day or two for a funeral bouquet with sunflowers. We select the flowers, check the combination, and provide the ribbon with the text. It is possible to do it faster, but then we are dependent on the current stock.

What you provide with the order:

  • The date and time of the farewell
  • The address where the bouquet needs to be (funeral home, church, home address)
  • Which text appears on the ribbon
  • Any color preferences besides the sunflowers
  • Your availability for feedback

We handle deliveries in Haarlem and the surrounding area ourselves, with our own courier. No anonymous delivery service, no damage due to improper handling. Our courier knows the funeral homes in the region and knows how to deliver a bouquet properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a funeral bouquet with sunflowers suitable for any age?

It suits people who had a colorful, warm personality in their lives. For very formal farewells or for situations where the family expects traditional funeral flowers, a more subdued choice is sometimes more appropriate. If in doubt, we can help you think through what you tell us about the person.

How long does a funeral bouquet with sunflowers stay beautiful?

Sunflowers stay fresh for an average of five to seven days, provided they are watered regularly. For a farewell where the bouquet remains for several days (for example, during a viewing), we refresh the flowers in the meantime or provide a second delivery.

Can I combine sunflowers with a specific theme or color?

Yes. Whether it concerns the deceased's favorite color, a garden or nature theme, or flowers from their garden: we make it custom-made. Send us a photo of what you have in mind or give us a call.

Do you also deliver to a crematorium or cemetery?

Yes, in Haarlem and the surrounding area. We know which crematoria and cemeteries are in our region and are familiar with the practical procedures: delivery in advance, on time for the ceremony, and attention to whether the bouquet may be placed by the coffin.

How far in advance do you order a funeral bouquet?

Preferably at least a day in advance if you want something specific put together. For emergencies, you can call us in Haarlem, and we will see what we can do for the same day.

What if I want sunflowers but don't want the bouquet to be too cheerful?

That works well. We can make sunflowers more calmly embedded by combining them with dark green branches, eucalyptus, or white roses. It then becomes a quieter, warmer variant instead of a bright, sunny bouquet.
